About this newsletter
In subscribing to this newsletter, you can expect an e-mail note from me whenever I publish a blog post, research publication, talk, or project on my site silviacanelon.com.
About me
I’m Silvia, a Philly-based biomedical engineer turned informaticist, curious about all intersections of data and society. I’m passionate about data education, open source tools, and data literacy as ways to build power in communities.
I enjoy using the R programming language and Quarto to optimize my data science workflow. Both open source tools are featured throughout my site.
About my site
My personal website is a digital garden of posts reflecting my data interests and my work as a researcher in an academic setting.
Blog. Meeting People Where They R, a space where I share practical data resources and tutorials.
Talks. Invited talks and workshops, each linked with accompanying materials.
Publications. Research publications, each linked with accompanying preprints, posters, and/or news pieces.
Projects. Openly available educational material I have created,
along with software and tools I have contributed to or designed.
About the visitors
The folks that tend to visit my site are:
R or Quarto users looking for educational content
Researchers interested in my scientific publications
Data folks interested in accessibility
Everyday folks using a public tool, like a Philly happy hour map
Maybe you see yourself reflected in one of these groups, and maybe not. Whatever the case, I’m happy you’re here!
About my work
I work as a data analyst at the Penn Medicine Center for Health Justice at the University of Pennsylvania. My research interests include applications of biomedical and spatial data science in the public and population health fields.
I’m working on projects that use electronic health record (EHR) and geospatial data to explore how the neighborhood environment and access to urban nature can impact the health of individuals in Philadelphia.
